Brian Keene's zombies were possessed by demons. The zombies in the Nocent series were possessed by the spirits of an alien species called, the Nocent.

Brian's zombies had a cohesive plan to take over the world. This is scary in its own way because there is intelligence added to the mix. It's not the usual aimless, shambling. Also, animals become undead in these books. Nowhere is safe when birds, fish and even bugs can get you! This series of books stands alone in many regards.

The Nocent zombies themselves are just slow, shambling ghouls, but the sole survivor of the species, Rend, is the brains of the group and he has a plan. This series adds the concept of communicating with the spirits of the dead through a psychic medium to the mix. There is also a scene where a man is trapped in a house that is haunted by the spirit of the zombie that is clawing at the windows trying to get into the house. Talk about screwed!
